Subject: Follow up on the Texas Latino Congreso

Texas Latino Congreso Co-Conveners,

Next Saturday, September 23rd, the Congreso will open!

We have made significant progress and will keep working on the Congreso so that ultimately, we have successful working sessions with specific outcomes!

Our collective goals are to 1. Repeal SB4 – the Show me your Paper/Racial Profiling law; 2. Protect DACA recipients, pass clean Dream Act – no border wall with pathway to citizenship; 3. Block the construction of the Border Wall; and, 4. Develop strategies to prepare for the problems Latino families face and will with climate change – Hurricanes.

Next week, we have:

1. The last Co-Convener call on Tuesday, September 19th at 10 am. The call number is (712) 775-7000; Participant Access Code: 1050044#

2. Follow up on Call is set for Wednesday, September 20th at 10 am. After we received excellent advise from Senator Martin Quezada, on Arizona’s Boycott following the passage of AZ SB 1070, we will discuss next steps before the discussion at the Congreso on the Economic Boycott. If you are interested in taking part in this discussion, please confirm with me. We will send you a different number for this call.

3. We are still set to host a press conference at the Texas Latino Congreso, on Saturday, September 23rd at 9:00 am. More on this to be discussed at the Tuesday Convener call. We are asking the Co-Conveners to be part the press conference. Please confirm!

4. Register online, if you are planning on attending and have your 5 to 10, or more, register online as well. Facebook will not work.

10:00 AM to 12:00 Opening Session: Strategies to Fight Anti-Immigrant Attacks

12:00 Noon to 1:45 PM Luncheon – Legal and Legislative Challenges

2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Working Session: Presentation with specific local, state and national strategies – outcomes

4:00 PM to 5:30 PM Transforming Political Power in 2018 and 2020 Election

5:30 PM to 6:00 PM Report on Work Sessions

6:00 PM to 7:00 PM Reception – Celebration Latina Elected Officials and Candidates

We still need you to, if you haven’t and if you have stay at it:

1. Ask that each Co-Convener confirm 5 to 10, or more, leaders and elected officials from your network attend the Latino Congreso. Have them register online at http://texas.latino-congreso.org/

Please extend an invitation to leaders from your network to attend the Congreso (lunch will be provided).

2. Promote the Latino Congreso. See the e-blast below, please to your network, post on the on your Facebook page, twitter account. (Please drop this entire message before you send out and add your message).

3. We request that you send us your photo to prepare an e-blast with your photo to encourage leaders and elected officials to attend the Texas Congreso. (see the e-blast below, within this email, we sent out from Jodi Perry one of the Co-Conveners).

Please let me share the latest update on the Congreso:

1. We had an excellent call with Arizona Senator Martin Quezada, Dem Whip, on their struggle to defeat AZ – SB 1070 and the AZ economic boycott.

2. Confirmed to Speak at the Congreso are Representatives Hon. Diana Arevalo, Hon. Ramon Romero, Hon. Roberto Alonzo, Dallas Commissioner Hon. Dr. Elba Garcia, Nina Perales, MALDEF Vice President of Litigation, Dr. Rogelio Saenz, Dean of Public Policy School at UTSA, Dr. Gabriela Lemus, Executive Director of Progressive Congress and Nativo Lopez, Hermanda Mexicana.

3. Co-Conveners confirmed to Speak or Facilitate the Sessions/Working Sessions are: Domingo Garcia, LULAC 102 and Major Sponsor; Linda Chavez, Texas Hope and Sponsor; Jodi Perry, Texas Latina List and Sponsor, Sam Guzman, TAMACC and Patricia Gonzales, WCVI.

If you haven’t confirmed with me, let me know if you are attending or your plans changed and you are now able to join us so that we can include you in speaking/facilitor’s role.

4. 20 Co-Conveners have agreed to be part of the Texas Latino Congreso. You will see from of the logos of the Co-Conveners (see below).

5. We have representation from the following cities confirmed to attend the Congreso from the following cities: San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Bryon, College Station, Rockdale, Fort Worth, Desoto, Denton, Arlington, Irving, Flower Mound, Highland Village, Taylor, Lewisville, Twenty Palm, Grand Prairie, McKinney, Italy, Frisco, Albuquerque, Los Angeles, and Washington DC.
